Mississippi river island 828 enhancement project (Summer 2021)
DESCRIPTION:
Pool 2 is an underutilized resource for paddlers. The island at River Mile 828 has attracted recreational river users for decades. We will promote this site for paddler use and we hope that eventually this could become a part of a larger Pool 2 water trail system. Project budget has not yet been determined. BACKGROUND: In recent years, a combination of man-made and natural changes to the local hydrology has made the channel between the island and the right descending bank of the river difficult to navigate, reducing the island’s recreational appeal. Lack of use and neglect have diminished suitability for daily use and overnight camping. This project will refresh that appeal by cleaning & enhancing this location and promoting its use by paddlers who want to avoid the main navigational channel. It could offer a rest stop plus rustic campsites. PROJECT OBJECTIVES: Expand use of Island 828 by paddlers, and others, for day use and/or camping. Eventually tie this project in with a network of paddler water trails. Also work to increase paddler members in FOP2. Friends of Pool 2 will recruit volunteers to clean sandy beach areas and former island campsites. Focus will be on cleaning up makeshift fire pits and purchasing/installing new fire rings. We may selectively clear abandoned and overgrown trails that had connected sites throughout the island. We intend to pursue additional ways to enhance the island for recreational use. Volunteers and Board Members will provide labor as required. Donations to help offset costs are welcomed. Check back on this page for updates throughout the summer and fall of 2021. |
