YOUR RIVER. YOUR VOICE.

State of the River Report

The Board of Directors of Friends of Pool 2 appreciates the work that went into producing this report, but we have a few questions about content, basic assumptions, and conclusions reached. The imminent threat and potential negative impact of invasive carp within Pools 2 and 3 are grossly under emphasized. Recent improvements to the metropolitan fishery that are touted as a success story by the report would be destroyed by the influx of non-native carp. The report's use of eDNA testing as reliable evidence of the range of Asian carp is questionable, and the confidence that closure of the locks at Upper St. Anthony Falls and the Ford Dam will stop the spread of carp into Minnesota Lakes is overly optimistic.

Beyond these concerns, the report will undoubtedly serve as a useful tool to raise public awareness of invasive species, sediment load, and contaminant issues in the River, and for these reasons we applaud the effort.

FYI, here is a link to a Pioneer Press article that discusses this report.
