Safety Saturday Series

BROUGHT TO YOU BY FRIENDS OF POOL 2

Our mission is simple but vital: to help individuals and families enjoy the beauty and adventure of Pool 2 of the Mississippi River while staying safe and respectful of the river environment. This stretch of the mighty Mississippi River offers miles of scenic shoreline, abundant wildlife and excellent opportunities—from kayaking and paddle-boarding to fishing and bird-watching—yet its currents, commercial traffic, changing weather and unexpected hazards mean that safety and preparedness are always key. According to our “River Use 101” guide, users must be aware of the main navigation channel, river currents, and the fact that the river’s edge is not the same as a quiet lake shore.

Each Saturday this series will highlight a seasonal safety topic tailored to the many ways people enjoy Pool 2—whether you’re fishing for walleye, casting for sauger, boating with the family, kayaking or simply bird-watching along the banks. In spring we’ll discuss rising water levels, swift currents and debris; in summer, sun exposure, water traffic, and life-jacket essentials; in fall, colder water, swift winds and the challenges of shorter days; and in winter, ice hazards, hypothermia risks and safe shoreline access. By approaching each outing with awareness—whether you’re paddling, angling or observing bald eagles—we aim to make your time on the river safe, memorable and meaningful. Join us each week to build stronger habits, deepen your connection with the river and help ensure Pool 2 remains a thriving recreational resource for years to come.
