We appreciate every bid! For more than ten years, Friends of Pool 2 has sponsored a variety of fall events to help raise awareness and funds to achieve our goals of improving water quality and public safety, enhancing fish and wildlife habitat, monitoring and supporting critical dredging and other efforts to keep the Mississippi Pool 2 channel open and safe for all, and protecting fragile shorelines and backwaters. We've encouraged research into island building, one effective method of improving habitat while reducing the growing problem of excess sediment. This sediment threatens the health of the entire river system and the viability of Pool 2 and Lake Pepin as treasured recreational and natural resources. We actively support research and testing of new ways to slow the migration of aquatic species such as invasive carp and zebra mussels. Most recently, we've voiced your collective concerns to the USACE (Corps of Engineers) regarding potential disposition of the Minneapolis Locks and Dams, and we are currently preparing to work alongside the DNR and the National Park Service regarding potential construction of new beaches and campsites in Pool 2. Your donations through these events supports new research, education and outreach efforts, water safety programs, cleanup initiatives, and many other river-related projects. Grants help us leverage our financial impact, but applications often require a percentage of matching funds from our organization. A reserve fund allows us to take advantage of grant opportunities, such as our current Kids Reach the River campaign, funded in part through a No Child Left Inside grant administered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. But even with this generous support, we are required to raise funds to match 100% of the grant contribution. FOP2 strongly believes that local and regional decision makers need to experience the vital resource that is Pool 2 in an intimate and personal way. This means more than biking along the river, or driving over it on their way to the capitol. Sadly, many of the agency representatives and lawmakers who have a major impact on environmental and infrastructure policy have never actually experienced the river. To continue to support Friends of Pool 2, please renew your membership or make a donation during this campaign. Any amount that you can spare will be greatly appreciated.
